Shooting a Magazine Cover

I was asked to shoot a magazine cover for "Concrete International," a niche publication which is part of the construction industry. The subject, the association's new president, heads an engineering and testing firm in St. Paul. I'll be posting the completed cover when it's ready.

"The final photos look great - resolution is fantastic; this is some excellent work."

This is the original image before any editing. It looks pretty good but has some problems. The exposure value of the computer monitor is much lower than than value of the strobes I used. As a result, the computer monitor, although set at full brightness, looks black. The original cropping of the image has too much information (legs, feet, and floor) at the bottom of the image. The samples on the desk and on the above shelf are dull.

Here's the final image after editing. The image has been cropped to a magazine sized (approximate) 8x10. Ample room has been left at the top of the image for the magazine's masthead. The computer monitor has been stitched in. The subject has been retouched and spots on the floor have been cleaned up.
